Tucson Safe Place program for LGBTQ people

The Tucson Police Department (TPD) is starting a new program called Safe Place, where members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community can go if they’ve been the victim of a hate crime or fear they might become one. TPD is looking for businesses to sign up and agree to let people stay inside until police arrive. The department is working with the group Tucson Pride, launching the program this weekend during the group’s annual gay pride events. Police will give participating businesses a rainbow police badge decal to place on their windows.

The initial effort will focus on enrolling businesses in Downtown Tucson, which has a high concentration of people, shops, and restaurants.
